I wouldn't pull the steering wheel off to straighten it. This will put the adjustment point of your steering gear in the wrong place. You will have more play in the wheel at it's center point, and if you try to adjust it down, you will create a tight spot somewhere else in the gear's travel, which will eventually create galling on the gear.
