Thanks for the comments guys! I was going to put the heater core back in tonight by myself after just giving it a good rinsing but I think I'll wait the extra days to have it professionally cleaned and inspected. This isn't as easy as putting a radiator back in.
Also - the flimsy foam that was around the core is in decent shape (just dirty). Should I put it back in with this foam surrounding it or is there a better material to use - something more insulating and reflective? Or is that bad? I was thinking like reflectix or something thin but with a high R value. Or do I not want it to be very well insulated?
