I used to be the same way... before I gave poly a try in a select few places (torque and track rods). The manual trans is apparently pretty harsh on the rear end... and I drive like an old man! All of the rubber bushings were just demolished back there.
The poly bushings do "grip" the shells somewhat. It's the metal sleeves that lubed up (with this crrrrazy marine lube that IPD sells cheap) and are more able rotate within the bushing. The rotating doesn't really affect much.
That "snubbing" effect that the rubber bushings "offer" is really a job that should fall to the shock absorbers. Though, I'll admit I'm real naive to suspension engineering. :-)
