My number one rule for B20's is to leave the cam alone until you knock a lobe off.

The cam should be workable, did you degree it in? If not, buy a degree wheel & a dial indicator & do it.

I'd be happier if ...... it didn't ping.

At what rpm's does it ping? You can easily slow the advance curve down, it's just a matter of bending out the spring attachment.

The D cam is smaller which means that it will ping worse.

I'd be happier if it idled smoothly

The cam you have is not big enough to idle badly, something is wrong with your carburettors and/or your distributor.

What is your timing at idle, at 1000rpm, at 2000rpm, at 3000rpm & what is the maximum advance?

What is the story with your Mikunis? Do they have the correct rubber mounts? Do they have the correct needle & seat for running with a fuel pump?
