New model years seem to start randomly these days. I remember when just about everyone started their new model year in September. Back in the day, if you didn't find what you wanted on the lot, you would custom order it from the factory. GM used to cut off orders in early May for the current model year because they transitioned during the Summer to release new models in September. If you had a car made in August or September of, say 1990, they would be 1991 models. Production dates were only important if they made mid-production changes.
