Windshield R&R 200

Just did this job past week end. I was motivated by the wet footwell when it rained, then I found a windshield at a pnp that spent its life in a garage. You should have seen the car, its condition made it a sin for it to be there. The biggest deal about the clips is the area behind the strip where there is a center rubber ridge causes an indent in that rubber, the clips must line up so they will mate. I solved that by prefitting the clips to the winshield with a bit of tape. Get the tape on the top side so you can take it off after installation, I didn't want the tape to be part of the seal. You need 24 good clips, forget the two piece kind they just povide another place to break and not hold. I took extra from other cars at the pnp where glass was already cracked. Get plenty they're britle and you have to clean the sealant off. Pre mate the glass to the now cleaned and painted opening, use a piece of tape to mark the mate then cut the tape leaving halve on the frame and on the glass. Do the center at the top and bottom like this. Also pay attention to the two little pads on the bottom, they're about 12" in from the corners and get your clips prefit thinking about those to. The sealant came in 1/4" 5/16" 3/8", I used 5/16" and I haven't found out yet if it leaks. I wasn't shy about taking a paint stir stick and motivating the sealant back under the glass once in place. I would like to try it again with 3/8 but it may make the window stand to proud and you can push down on the window only so much before that lousy noise happens.
The biggest problem with the job for me is rust. I thought 20 minutes with my die grinder and a bur would put things right. Three hours later I was finally ready to prime and paint. Lucky for me the job would be hid behind the trim. Got ready to put the sealant in place and I find the paint just starting to bubble at the top corner. Day four. You have to have help setting it in. A third would be nice. A dang good bodyshop specializing in restos would be even better. Trickflier
