With the spark plug inserted, can you wiggle it by hand? Even a minimal amount of play will open up enough of a leak in the chamber to affect combustion.

Kind of a longshot, but is there any chance that an old seal ring got stuck on the seat in the head?

Otherwise, inspect for barbs or cracks on the seating area in the head.
