It's good to hear that you are squared away...I would still have the pitted spots on the old gear welded and reprofiled since it is out...luckily the pieces are fairly big and so easier to work with (than a watch), and keep it as a spare...I'd duct tape to protect areas from welding splatter (analogous to how they cover all but the incision area of a surgery patient)...you wouldn't want to allow a welding splatter in the wrong place...epoxy products like JB weld are not up to the task of standing up to the heavy loading...only metal will do!
...a final thought...you didn't mention details on the position of the pits, but might it be possible on reassembly to reposition the gear so that the repair area would now only be actually under load and used at the extremities of steering?...it wouldn't be the first time that trick was used when just a spot on a gear had a repair...
