Ron, Thanks for the idea. I think what I will do is hang on to the old box with the damaged gear in it and maybe someday...who knows? As far as moving the damaged cog to the end, it's the gear that's on the pitman arm so it is only three teeth. The center tooth, the big one, is pitted once on either side. I don't see a way to have the damaged area anywhere except front and center. If I understand how this works.
In case anybody wants to know how much this pitting affects the steering...it was the first thing I noticed the first time I drove the car. Felt like a binding place in the steering.
