It shouldn't be doing that, your thermostat isn't working properly, or the radiator is clogged or the block is silted up or the waterpump isn't working properly.

If it's in decent condition the standard fan should cope fine. Adding an electric fan doesn't address the actual fault.

If you take off the mechanical fan you need to retain the conical water pump pulley, else the belts won't line up.
