In addition to all of the above, be sure there is no grease nipple or plug catching the cross before it has made it's full progress to push the cups out.
Also, see if the cross can be turned in a manner which gives you more motion before it bottoms out.

If you are catching up on the flanges and not the cross, then try moving 90 degrees and work on the other pair. Sometimes it matters which pair you do first.

They are a pain but once you've done a few they get easier.
