As Dan asks, did you check the O2 sensor?
A defective O2 sensor will cause the computer to run rich.
(I'm new to this but) Remove the sensor and heat it in a propane flame. Look for changing voltage readings between the sensor body and and third (non-heater) wire.
O2 sensors become sluggish or even inoperative after awhile (silicone and lithium cause damage). You can use a sensor for a mustang as a replacement by cutting and crimping on the old wires and plugs. Bosch #13942.
