Hm. Well I checked the timing and found it was about 23 degrees BTDC. So I retarded it back to 15. Revving it brings it up to a shaky 35 degrees BTDC. Running it for a day, I can say this has made it run hotter, and there's now a big flat spot. I think the flat spot is why I monkeyed with the timing in the first place.
My plan now is to put in the cooler thermostat (I have one) and maybe if I get near a cam dwell meter check the points, and then if that all seems good...maybe it is time to do the jetting procedure per IPD. (I have the Weber conversion.) I wonder, would a worn out distributor cause a flat spot and squirrely running? I have gone through the Weber with an IPD kit, so I think things are okay there. I also cleaned out the jets yesterday, so that isn't responsible for my flat spot.
Thanks for commenting, George
