Does the fluid taste like caramel? If not, it could be the grease you expected to find in there except in a more than usual liquid state. It could also be mixed with some water. If I am not mistaken the armor around the actual spinning cable is just a modified spring and isn't fluid proof. A heat shrink tube makes a nice repair, except a tube big enough to go over the end fixtures may not shrink enough to tighten around the cable. Is there a tape that shrinks when heated?
