IIRC it grounds (pin 20) on the intake manifold at fuel rail. Someone correct me if I am wrong on that. I'd also check your battery cable at the power steering pump. The cable can look okay but be broken (severe corrosion) under the plasic covering.
Other grounds to look at are in the front of the fenders, next to the headlights. I used a wire bush on all of mine but many on here have had excellent results with deoxit contact cleaner.
I believe this car had a bad ground that spiked voltage on the ecu just enough to damage it. Over time it just got worse and fnally lost it's ability to advance timing.
Ground cleaning is one of the first things I would do to any "new" Volvo in my family.
