Going back to basics a bit.
A good fully charged battery
A good earth from battery to body
A good earth from engine to body.
A good earth where the starter meets the block. i.e If the block and or starter has been painted they need the painted surfaces cleaned off to make them metal to metal, including the bolts.
You say 444. Which engine are you using? 6v?
6v often needs a bit of persuasion.
I had a similar problem with a 6v Amazon where the solenoid was so sluggish it caused a lot of arcing when it tried to bridge the 2 power contacts. Eventually had to change it. I see that you've already gone down that route.
