Well don't hook up that vacuum retard whatever you do. Terrible system.
Start at 10 BTDC and advance it a couple of degrees every time you drive it until it pings, and back off a bit. Set the timing with the engine running slowly as possible, or set it at 3500 rpm to about 34-35 degrees. Be sure to wear a full face shield though!
Eventually it will "feel" right when you drive it.
