Yes, I realize that. That's why I thought that the top image on the page below might provide an answer in that, at least on some of the Duetts, they used pretty high brackets on top of the crossmember (much higher than on the 544s), probably, with the M40, to make up for the low crossmember and the short "tower" and bring the shifter receiver higher up into the tunnel hole. I see no reason why bolting a "platform" onto the top of the crossmember shouldn't be the best solution for you. That way you can attach the hardware you have the way you showed in the diagram and picture you posted.
