I would definetly go with a 6V alternator. I had replaced the brushes and cleaned my 6V generator, but still I got the "AMP" light. Generators don't make any power at the low end, but at the high end. My 6V 60A alternator works great, but it does require some modifications for it to fit. With it, I always have enough power and haven't had the amp light yet.
You can't just buy the alternator bracket, because those only fit B18/B20 motors. The original bracket needs to be re-drilled, so that it can slide forward. A longer B18 upper mount is needed as well.
If you buy the alternator, I will let you know what needs to be done.
