Hello,

In 1968, Volvo along with all other manufacturers were required to make safety changes and the switches and knobs were changed.

The new style knobs were designed to break away easily and that is what has probably happened.

It is fairly easy to remove the broken off part of the knob and to replace it with a good used knob.
