Also check the condition of the transmission mount.

Very often, the combined misalignment of the engine/trans to the body, due to a loose linkage, failing linkage due to rust, sagged or split rubber mount block, and bad small bushings in the shift linkage, causes the shifter's mechanical position to disagree with the positions inside the Neutral switch.
