No apologies necessary. I am still of two minds about it myself, but fills a very specific need without abandoning systems that I understand well.

The dealer-specific software you speak of is available to the public and there are very good Bluetooth ODBII scanners available with the software. If you get into the latest models, the software becomes harder and harder to find.

Personally not that much of a fan of the E46 but it was the last of the "pure" BMW's although watered down. Still a phenomenal driving car.
