I never noticed the "oily" nature of the vapor when my heater core went. Or possibly, I attributed the smear of the windshield to not having cleaned the inside in ages. What finally confirmed it for me was that I was getting a sweet smell/taste with the heat running - and a lot of headaches after driving, but maybe that was the traffic.
In any case, it can be tricky to confirm 100% if your heater core is leaking when it is a tiny leak, but you definitely don't want to do the job of replacing it if you don't have to.
