I can't offer any experience with this issue but I thought it rather interesting as I just bought a '73 ES that the previous owner was trying to install a Ford 302 but gave up for reasons I don't know. The engine was just sitting in the car when I bought it no mods had been done. I am returning it to stock. All the original parts came with it, minus the 302. Good luck with your quest.
