FWIW I would put a 4 cyl VW TDI engine in there....if you get the gearing right you will be pleased with the mileage and performance. Engine is small ish, will still have that tractor feel of a 4 pot, and adapter plates are available for RWD applications. You will need a nice long final drive ratio though, probably a new rear involved. I have been using an electronic turbo diesel for a few months (Sprinter) and am really pleased with fuel economy and performance. With some sound dampening and the right gearing it should a quiet ride. I'm pretty sure I have seen pics of the diesel VW engine in a 120 so there is precedent. Never was that pleased with B23 economy so don't know why you would bother. Turbo diesels are the way to go in efficient internal combustion engines...
All that being said Irv Gordon has cracked 2.5? million miles in his 1800 and I'm pretty sure he had to drive fast to do that. Maybe a better stereo or earplugs are all you need then floor it and adore it!
Re electric: If my engine ever dies (not likely) I will repower with full electric if possible.....saw Gatica years ago and was sold.
