The five main bearing red block engines, B18/B20, and subsequently B21/B23 were designed by Volvo as auto engines from the beginning (50s), having nothing to do with tractors, or agriculture.

They were referred to as "tractor engines" because of their legendary reliability and durability, and occasionally the cars were referred to as tractors by morons who thought they were crude.
