Hello,
The PMGR starter has extra gears in it to produce more torque to turn the engine. I don't see its benefits here unless used in diesel engines. Diesel engines have high compression ratio to deal with thus need heavy duty starter. PMGR starter usually spins slower than direct gear starter as gear speed is converted to extra torque. The starter has an extra 'hump' on it to include the gearing.
The standard starter have direct motor to gear connection for starting. This is enough for most Volvo petrol engine applications as they usually start after 2-3 seconds of cranking.
Some shop like to claim 'this and this' is replacement for original item. This is going the aftermarket way. It may have some benefits or just to make customer spend more.
Regards,
Amarin.
