I agree about the springs. Any way to take them apart without making a mess of things? The only purpose I know for that mechanism is to keep the pickup on the bottom of the tank and the sender referencing the low point of the fuel with changes in the tank's dimension as it gets filled and emptied, heated and cooled.
As for the longer pump iPd sells, they make it sound like an upgrade. My favorite one to use now is the Airtex E8778, which match the original dimensions. Getting to 4 years now on the first of them, compared with early failures on some no-name replacements in the 240 application. Its only job is to get the fuel from the bottom of a warm, nearly empty tank to the main pump without vapor. A full tank of cool gas will have no problem being sucked by the new main pump even if the tank pump is left unpowered, so I question the use of "upgrade" in selling this. A Walbro?
