On my 1997/98 Green Book wiring diagrams, there does seem to be only one coolant temperature sensor on the engine, which supplies info to the ECU. The temperature gauge in the cluster is driven from an output (4/46B:23) of the ECU.
The second sensor on the earlier engine was probably connected to the temperature gauge. If the later engine has no capability to install a second sensor, you'll have to find some other way of driving the gauge in your 1993.
