I think you might like an 850.
They are a much newer design, much more comfortable & quiet on the inside, and MUCH safer. Good AC, good heat. Similar (if not slightly better) fuel economy to the 240 (depending on if you go with an auto or manual). They idle smooth, they pull well when you lean on them. They are just as easy to work on as the 240 is.
They fit tall folk well. A friend of mine is 6' 4" and he drives an 850. Previously, he had a 240 wagon. He has told me that his 850 is more comfortable and easier to get in/out of.
They are Front Wheel drive, which some people like, some people hate.
850s are also as cheap as they've ever been. In my area, you can find a nice used one for around $2000. I don't think they will ever be cheaper.
I love the 240. To date, it is still Volvo's most successful car. That being said, these things are becoming antiques before our eyes, and parts are getting harder to find. Even the *newest* 240 is now 22 years old. I sell Volvo parts for a living, and I can't tell you how often I've been unable to source something for the 240 that was once available. Support for the 850 is very good right now and looks to be for a long time.
If I were going to get a "newer" Volvo, I'd find a nice 850 and call it good.
