Hi George
I have spoken with the buyer and he has advised that meter is not designed to work with 6 volt systems so this is almost definitely why you are experiencing this issue, especially if you have tested it on a more modern vehicle and it worked as expected. in terms of alternative methods, I think your best bet will be to speak to a classic car specialist or have a look on classic car forums. We certainly don't have anything in our range that is going to be suitable. I'm sorry I couldn't help.
Kind Regards
Draper Tools.

So now i need to find a dwell meter that works with 6 volts at a reasonable price.
