BobbyC, alschnertz, aleekat,
All Volvo 700 and newer series use some manner of the blade-style fuse.
Like these Bussmann fuses here:
http://www.cooperindustries.com/content/public/en/bussmann/consumer/products/automotive_circuitprotectionprdandacc/automotive_fuses/blade_fuses_atmatcmaxid.html

Some fuses glow after they blow. Fancy!
You do not have the GPC (or torpedo) style fuses as used lastly on 240 (and, am not sure, earlier, 340 / 360 series) and earlier. Shades of Lucas Electronics where the headlight "suck in the darkness".
What Art Benstein mentions as ceramic-style fuses ... The better style of these fuses use a ceramic body with a copper-alloy material comprising the fuse.

(Lest we forget the single blade fuse used for the injection (and ignition?) system in the 240 engine bay with LH-Jetronic up to 1990. (Oh, and the ABS fuses, so equipped, on 240s. Or is it the SRS fuses? I forget.)
The crappy versions of the GBC fuse use a plastic body and / or a crappy quality conductor material comprising the fuse. These plastic body GBC-type fuses melt with excess current draw and corrosion at bonded contacts along the wireline on the load side. Also happens if the fuses load, like the headlights or main fuel pump, as a poor connection to ground.
I gathered several handfuls of the glass envelop Bussmann GBC fuses from various junkyard visits. Bussman seems not to make these anymore.
Does that help?

Any questions on heat and corrosion, like that which causes the fuse / relay box at the center dash console behind the ashtray in your 700 series, all 940, and some 760 / 960, to get hot, melt, and short?
Current draw from a failing Bosch main fuel pump, or the Regina in tank pump, can make things hot. Yet I'll also guess, on that 20+ something year old Volvo of yours, your wire harness has corrosion an any bonded interface, like the wire harness connection at the relays under the relay box, and at connectors, and at fuel / ignition system wire harness connectors to sensors and devices.
Why I included the link to my post of treating the back side of the fuse box in my 1990 Volvo 240 DL wagon. The issue is systemic and will effect all of our Volvo automobiles.
Questions?
Hope that helps.
