At least 20 years ago, I was looking for a used car and saw a sweet looking GM X-body convertible, an Oldsmobile I think.
I had never seen one like it.
The price was pretty good (it was late fall) and I thought that I could get a good deal.
When I looked at the interior, I saw that the back seat was about 3 feet wide!
I talked with the lot owner, and he told me that it was a well done conversion.
From what I could see the conversion company had added very heavy reinforcement below and behind the rocker panels - a couple of large box beams, one beside and one below the rocker panels.
The one below the rocker was laid flat, and the other one was laid upright - welded together to form a L-shape. I could not really see how they were attached to the body. The workmanship was well done, and the car was painted below and undercoated.
I had two grown children, so I had to pass.
