The '87 is becoming more and more disasembled by the day. It was always a pokey car, so underpowered it almost seemed dangerous to drive. Kind of like Volvo had taken a design detour at some point. I think that was the point where they went with narrow main or rod bearings.
Driving the '92, it is day and night, but the RPM at cruise isn't that different (now with a working 4th gear), ~200 RPM or less. That brought up the question if there was had been an increase in engine performance between '87 and '92. For example, if Volvo had gone back to an A style cam in the US, it wouldn't make sense to change it.
