240 no start problem 1989

The ignition control module (part # 3501921) is screwed to the inner fender under the hood, just behind the battery. It mounts to an aluminum heatsink. There should be thermal conductive paste between the module and the heatsink, and between the heatsink and the metal fender. Over time, the past dries up and loses effectiveness. When the module overheats, the car dies. When the module cools off, the car can be restarted.

The module itself is quite expensive new if bought from Volvo, but there are plenty of much more affordable aftermarket ones. I suggest you search for part 3501921 at FCPeuro.com to see what's out there. Note that some come with the heatsink and others dont.

That said, a $5 tube of thermal conductive paste and the 10 minutes it takes to remove the module, clean the mating surfaces, apply the paste, and reinstall MAY be all you need to do.

good luck,
john
