Hi,
I have a 740 volvo (non turbo) 88 model, and i have the *EXACT* same problem (except it isn't REALLY loud at idle, just loud enough to be annoying). When hot at idle (or slightly lower->idle air motor is slow, so it takes a while to go back to proper idle), all i can hear is a sort of groaning noise from what appears to be the belts. Before i had the cambelt done, it was minor, but the second the car is slightly above idle, the noise dissapears! As you could imagine, it drives me nuts....I can't work out why! Ever since i had the cam belt done (single cam engine, btw), the mechanics tightend the belt to more than it was before (now about 5 mm deflection on the belt) and it makes the noise constantly at idle, and loud enough to hear in the car with the radio and fan off and windows up. But, again, the second it lifts off idle, the noise goes again. Please help...!!! Also, i got a quote in aus dollars, i don't care about how bad the aus dollar is doing, but, a rubber coupling (the lump of rubber that joins the g/box to the tailshaft), should it cost ANYWHERE near $353????!!! (thats not incl. fitting!) I think that is a load of crap paying that much for some hard rubber! ANyways, Thanks heaps everyone!
