George --
It's probably a dirty or intermittent switch. These can be (very carefully) disassembled, cleaned, lubed, and reassenbled. I like to first wash out the switch with contact cleaner, then clean the all contacts using a pencil eraser, and finally use synthetic grease to lube the sliding ball. The grease is also good for sticking the ball in place (on the spring) during reassembly.
The window power goes through both the driver's and door switches so that one can't try to up the window while someone else is trying to down the same window. Thus a cruddy contact in either switch can completely interupt operation.
