/// Is your distributor aluminum? Be sure the capacitor has a good path to ground. I had problem with an aluminum distributor that had a steel nut pressed in at the capacitor mounting point. Corrosion caused the failure of the ground path for the capacitor. The points burned and arced causing timing changes. Look at the gear at the bottom of the distributor and the cam shaft teeth. I have seen intermittent backfiring and failure to run from a stripped camshaft.(144)
