Hello,
I have had some experience with "thumping" noises under my 1985 245 turbo.
I have had my driveshaft completely rebuilt, new center support bushing, u-joints, bearing, etc... (well, I tool it out, sent it out, and I put it back in.)
I believe "most" thumping noises can be attributed to the exhaust. In addition to checking the overall condition of exhaust hangers and exhaust condition, also check all clearences whrer the exhaust may come in contact with the body, axle, crossmembers, etc.. Upon my first inspection, everything looked O.K. to me, too. On my second look, I noticed where I only had about 1/4 in. clearence under the center support brace and also between the "pig tail" and the rear of the body. Exhaust hangars could be stretched, motor mounts could be bad, or mabey the previous owner could have had a crappy exh. job (probably not the case with you, but my P.O had my car "Midas-sized".
Drivetrain noises usually involve vibrations.
Good luck,
Ted (Bundy) ,Y.
