I own a 1983 Volvo 760.(twin gastank / extra weight))
I encoutered the same problem as you describe.
Installing standard shockabsorbers is not sufficient.
Your car's rearend will hit bottom and looks like a sitting duck.
A general garage, specializing in Volvo gave me the following advice:
bring the car back to it's original design.
Go to the wrecker's and obtain a pair of 700-stationwagonsprings and all
the original fixingmaterial (incl rubber grommets etc)
These springs are sturdier and can take a heavier load.
They will fit the sedan also.
Install a pair of premium brand shockabsorbers.
I followed his advice and am satisfied with the result.
BTW: I understand though that in the US selflevelingshocks for Volvo's are available from third parties against more reasonable prices than Volvo
charges
Good luck
