When I got my '72 142, it was not running and, through months of trial and error, finally landed on the rusty fuel tank as the source of the problem. As I learned later, one of the previous owners had let the tank run dry and then let it sit for a couple of years. After settling on the tank as the problem, I removed and drain it to find about a half gallon of rust residing at the bottom of the tank! I could not get the inside sealed because of the internal baffles so I had to settle for a second-hand unit from a salvage yard. The replacement was in much better condition, however, there was no internal fuel filter, only the quart-can-sized external filter.
