random rough idle 700 1989

Greetings- I have a re-occuring problem on my 89 740 wagon. Sometimes idles very rough and dies after starting. Always happens in what I call a hot-soak condition. Once I take off it smooths out but do occasionally experience short hiccups at cruising speed (usually lasts for about 1-2 seconds) all cylinders are dead, not a mis-fire, car starts to decelerate. If I give it more throttle it accelerates fine and will cruise nicely for sometimes 100 miles or so. The weird thing is sometimes it will run perfectly for weeks with no problems. I have done many things over the last year-tune-up,fuel filter, etc. I just replaced the IAV (at a cost of over $200) and thought that fixed it, but the problem came back the other day. This car is in beautiful shape otherwise and engine mechanicals are good, I hate to get rid of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
