Hard Starting Problem 200 1987

For all of you great mechanics that have let me know that I have been ripped off by a $244.00 fee to replace the fuel pressure regulator, here's the brief rest of the story.

The shop called yesterday to say that they were "dropping the tank" to check the hose in the tank that often goes bad. Come to find out, it was OK.

They then called and said that the fuel pump was bad (external). They said that when you turn off the car the system should hold around 25-30 lbs of pressure in the system but it was going down to around 5lbs. They said that the pump needs replaced. They have a good used Bosch there for $100.00. They will not install an aftermarket and warranty it.

Any suggestion. This is getting expensive. Should they have been able to determine that it was the external fuel pump earlier? Also, if it is the fuel pump that is not producing the proper pressure, was the fuel pressure regulator really bad in the first place?

Thanks for the help!!
