I think there are probably ways around it - perhaps you could run it
until it was pretty low, disconnect the fuel line at the rear and
run the pump(through a line into a gas can) until the tank was dry,
then pressurize the line going to the front of the car with a little
less air pressure than the regulator is set for (so you don't blow it
back into the tank), disconnect the electricity to the in-tank pump,
start the engine and let the air push the last of the fuel through
the injectors.
That should be relatively harmless.
BTW ALL gasolines have a finite gum content. It is measured both as
present before aging and after aging. The formation of the gum
is a polymerization reaction, like making rubber, nylon, polyethylene
or even solidification of epoxy. It is normally catalyzed by oxygen
but can also be by ultraviolet or visible light.
