'81 and later 240s have a white wire with a red stripe which connects to the tach, but I don't know about pre-'81s. I do know that if you run a wire from the feed terminal on the tach to the negative (-) terminal on the coil, the tach should work. Make sure the wire is run so that it will not get pinched, chafed or cut by anything, as if it shorts to ground the car will quit.
