I have had the best success using an impact (air or electric) on the strut nut.

Most important is to have the strut springs compressed completely (no load on the top plate) or the spring will take your head off.

If you are replacing the strut cartridges - look in the archives here - there are ways to replace the cartridge without removing the entire strut from the car - and without disconnecting the brake lines.
