Steering Shaft 1800 1966

This subject has come up before. Replaced the steering box on my 1800 with a decent one, original was a mess, also got a new rubber damper, the correct one for 1800. There is a significant gap between the steering shaft halves. The damper only fills about half the gap. The box position on the frame is not negotiable and the upper shaft half is where it always was. Are there differently designed splined clamps per model year or some other anomaly causing the gap or am I just overlooking something obvious? Thanks in advance for all replies.
