I second Georg's opinion. Sounds to me like classsic case of worn brushes. And they are very easy to replace. The worst part of the job is the removal and refitting of the generator itself. I have an alternator I have yet to swap in, mostly because I'm happy with the generator for the most part, Replacing brushes every 8 years or so is such a high price to pay. Replaced generator bearings once, also not difficult.
