240 ELECTRICAL GOIN' NUTS

SC -- chafing of a harness can happen to any year. The problem with pre-88 harnesses was the insulation which would chemically degrade spontaneously without any mechanical abrasion. Heat and oil seemed to accelerate this breakdown. Classic trouble spots were at the oil pressure sensor above the alternator and the alternator connections and the harness plug connection up on the firewall. But if you've got the segment of the harness under the crank pulley being abraded, no insulation could stand up to that.

I'd check the integrity of your wiring, starting with the alternator and working toward the starter and battery.
