Front shocks. I was warned. 200 1986

Hey, Jarrod, I'm taking a lunch break from doing the same job on my '89 right now.

You do have a spring compressor, right? DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT PROCEEDING WITHOUT ONE! YOU CAN BE SERIOUSLY INJURED!

Fot the strut top nut, Lisle makes a universal strut nut wrench kit (model 63400). I bought mine at Pep Boys, I think Sears has them, too. Lots of auto parts stores carry the Lisle line. It consists of a huge socket (24mm) that can be turned with another wrench (1 3/8in, open end, box, or adjustable) and an assortment of sockets and keys to hold the strut shaft (you need an 11/16in wrench for that).

Depending on which cartridges are in the car and which ones you are installing, you may need to "encourage" the shaft holder socket to slide onto the strut shaft. A hammer does a fine job.

For the strut cap nut (cartridge to tube retainer), a large-jaw Vise-Grip works fine. You want model 12LC, available anywhere that sells tools. If the cap nut is stubborn, a rod or long screwdriver and hammer can start it moving.

I've got one new strut cart and strut mount in, and I'm ready to compress the spring on the second. After that, I need to figure out how to get the tie rod ends off of the tie rod without destroying the tie rod. Those lock nuts are stubborn, and I can't get my impact wrench on them!

Hope this helps,

-Ron
